When it came time to refurbish an aging commercial plaza in the Bay Area, the building owners called upon BAW Architecture to entirely renovate the original plaza with the goal of continuing to attract and retain premier office tenants and to significantly increase the value of this distinguished property.
This large plaza area flanked by two mid-rise towers in the heart of the central business district in downtown Walnut Creek, California, had developed water leaks since its original construction some 25 years earlier. The owner identified this routine maintenance requirement as an excellent opportunity to upgrade the aging aesthetics of the entire plaza to provide the tenants of the building with a new and uplifting outdoor experience.
Taking inspiration from a recent trip to Prague, the BAW team incorporated many elements of classical European central town squares. A 60-square-foot formal garden surrounded by seating established the focal point for the new design. The project was executed within budget, and achieved the desired goals of increasing tenant occupancy rates and commercial value while significantly enhancing the plaza experience for the buildings occupants.
